UMDNJ Rutgers University medical program is where he did his Internal Medicine internship and residency from 1982-1985. Princeton Hospital in Princeton, New Jersey not only provided him with excellent training as part of the UMDNJ program, but it is also where he met his wife, Marianne and where they wed in 1984 at the former Governor’s estate.

Returning to upstate New York in 1985, Dr. Cohen started a solo practice in Internal Medicine in Syracuse, New York and took up residence with his wife Marianne in Fayetteville, New York. Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital was his primary hospital and he held a Clinical Faculty position at the main teaching hospital in Syracuse, Upstate Medical Center. Yearly faculty conferences held thru Upstate Medical at the Colony Resort on Longboat Key led his introduction to the gorgeous Gulfcoast area of Florida.

With their three girls, ages 4years, 2 years and 2 months, Lou and Marianne moved to Sarasota in 1990. Joining Sarasota Medical Associates, Dr. Cohen was the fifth physician in what was one of two Internal Medicine groups in town. 1994 brought major changes as Dr. Cohen was one of the founding members of Intercoastal Medical Group which today is the largest and most successful multi-specialty group in Sarasota with over 50 physicians.

Dr. Cohen has served on the Board of Directors of Intercoastal Medical Group, as well as the Board of Directors at Doctors Hospital from 1999-2005. He has also held the esteemed position of Chief of Internal Medicine at Sarasota memorial Hospital.

Medical research has always interested Dr. Cohen and from 1992-2001 he served as chief investigator at Clinical Studies in Sarasota, being the lead investigator in over 100 research programs. It was through this research exposure that Dr. Cohen developed his interest both in cholesterol disorders as well as osteoporosis. He trained under Dr. Antonio Gotto at Baylor University in one of the country’s first Lipid Disorders programs. The International Society of Clinical Densitometry bestowed upon him certification in Osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment in 2002. Dr. Cohen, already board certified in Internal Medicine, also became board certified in Geriatric Medicine in 1992.

In 2005, Dr. Cohen left Intercoastal Medical Group to join his friend and colleague, Dr. Brad Lerner, in the formation of LernerCohen Healthcare. In forming a small concierge practice, both physicians have decided to focus delivering the highest quality of personalized intensive medical care.

Marianne, his wife since 1984 works with Lou not only at home where they are both busy raising their three daughters and their two Golden Retreivers, but also in the office where she can also be seen attending to the front reception desk.
